01 / The test
Three questions I ask of anything I ship. Does it improve someone's life? Does it need the data it is asking for? Would anyone miss it if it vanished tomorrow?
Belkin killed the cloud but the devices kept working. A mental health app that never sent a private thought to a server. A voice computer you could talk to across the room, years before Alexa. Encrypted records that stayed encrypted, with no single key or administrator able to open them.

UCIC / Ubi
UCIC built voice interaction for connected products. Ubi brought an always-available, programmable voice interface into the home before the category settled.

I came in to lead the AI group and help teams across Alarm.com use AI in their everyday work. Helping engineers write and review software with it, running workshops, publishing practical guides, and setting clear rules for privacy, security, and compliance. After six months it was running well enough to hand to the team that owns it today, and I moved to the customer-facing side.
Now I lead engineering for AI Concierge, Alarm.com's natural-language system for managing security and automation. Customers use natural language, spoken or typed, across the web, voice, text messaging, and the security panel itself.
One system answers all of them the same way. It covers home security and automation, multi-site access control, and user management, for homes and for businesses.

Led teams unifying Facebook Pages and Groups, then directed the privacy experience settings team. That included the default privacy settings younger users get before they change anything, across more than 260 million monthly active people in the US and Canada.

Led the AI group behind Knowledge Search and Agent Assist, surfacing answers to support agents mid-conversation. Led the engineering work behind PCI compliance, ISO 27001 certification, and SOC 2 reporting, and prepared the product for launches in Europe.

Built inbound voice and outbound calling systems that reached 99.999% availability. Founded the China Technology Center and grew it from 17 engineers to 35. A four-week engineering bootcamp became the standard onboarding and cut new-hire ramp-up by half.

I love leading as much as I love building.
I grew up in Ukraine taking my toys apart. Putting them back together was the point, but so was the pile of parts left over, which I kept for whatever came next. My parents moved the family to the United States and made it plain that school was the thing you did not negotiate. I studied computer science at the University of Maryland and minored in human computer interaction, which is where the question on this page started. Not can it be built, but should anyone have to live with it.
Startups taught me to build from zero. Larger organizations taught me to build through others and at scale. Each changed how I approached the next. I have written the code, owned the roadmap, hired the team, carried the pager, and sat with users when the first version missed the mark.
The job, as I see it, is to make hard technology understandable and useful. It is also to create a place where people can be themselves, challenge each other thoughtfully, grow, and do the best work of their careers.
07 / Away from the keyboard
I can pick up really heavy objects.
Asked once what I was good at besides automating things, that is what I said. It is still the honest answer.
Under a bar
I held a record with a 600-pound deadlift in the 100% RAW Powerlifting Federation. These days I train to stay healthy, and tinker with strongman and CrossFit when time allows. The part I keep coming back to is coaching new lifters, which turns out to be the same job as engineering management: load the bar honestly, and do not let anyone skip the part that is hard.
At home
The house reacts to doors opening and to people being in a room, and most of it answers to voice. It is also the test bench. Living inside your own automation is the fastest way to learn which parts of it were never worth building.
Outside
Hiking, cooking, trying new cuisines, board games, and two dogs who love a walk. Family time is the part of the week I protect.
